Mechanical engineering is traditionally the strongest engineering discipline in Germany, whether measured by graduate numbers, the number of companies or the gross national product. Accordingly, the discipline can draw on a long-standing and extensive design methodology and has many sub-disciplines. But which product or better which end product is still purely mechanical today? Of course, there are many examples besides “screws”, but much innovation is derived from combining technical solutions from several disciplines. Cooperation between the disciplines is not always easy. What does this mean for German mechanical engineering?
These and other questions are discussed and solutions developed in the “Center for Systems Engineering” (CSE) at RWTH Aachen University. The Center is an association of three professors from mechanical engineering and computer science. In today’s episode we will talk to the managing directors of the CSE Dr. Jörg Berroth and Dr. Michael Riesener about the goals and chances of the CSE and which role MBSE plays in this context.
